In the case of the Des Moines Unified School District and its very well-dressed employee (at taxpayers’ expense), it seems most likely not. However, this is something that we all wonder about, and wonder what the real motives of those who are educating children are. This has become more and more evident, and you do not want to be naive at the expense of your child’s education.

The Story

Here is the story. ICE arrested the superintendent of Iowa’s largest government school district. The agency said that Ian Andre Roberts, a Guyana national, and by some miracle of incompetence, was hired by the school board there to be the superintendent of the Des Moines school district. He is in the country illegally and had a final order of removal.

“He had entered the U.S. in 1999 on a student visa, and was given a final order of removal by an immigration judge in May 2024.” ICE said

Roberts had existing weapon possession charges (that’s plural) from Feb. 5, 2020, according to the release from ICE. At the time of his arrest, in 2020, he was found in possession of a loaded handgun, $3,000 in cash, and a fixed-blade hunting knife. He was hired by the Des Moines school board only three years later, in 2023.

It is, and has been, a federal felony for a person in the U.S. without legal status to be in possession of lethal weapons. The possession of the cash invites questions as to what he was up to beyond the weapons charges.

His arrest has sparked widespread reaction from community leaders, educators, and lawmakers, with many expressing outrage and concern over the impact on the school district and the broader community. You think? This is in light of the extremely poor performance of the Des Moines schools he was in charge of. Schools where a very low percentage of students can even read.

How Roberts obtained a handgun, given his status as an illegal alien, is being investigated by the ATF. Roberts is currently being held in the Woodbury County Jail in Sioux City, according to ICE’s online detainee database.

My Perspective

Well, now, isn’t this interesting? The superintendent of one of the worst-performing school districts in the nation isn’t even here in this county legally, and is now a captured felon. Yet, thousands of parents were expected to entrust their children’s education to this man’s supervision? Every single person on this school board who voted to hire Roberts should be immediately fired.

That goes without saying, but it speaks to a larger issue. You cannot trust the conflicted motivations and the twisted incentives of a government bureaucracy with your precious children’s future and education. You only get one set of children; they file through kids like they were water. The one thing I have learned about bureaucracies is that they live to serve their own interests. This Roberts character is a prime example. He is obviously grifting more than enough to dress himself well, and this should tell you all you need to know about his actual priorities. His priority is himself.

Clearly, his priorities are to himself. To boot, he enriches himself at the expense of the taxpayers, as does the entire government school bureaucracy. So this man is no exception in that sense. He is clearly a glaring example because even the law was no consideration for him, but many who have not violated the laws as he did are doing the same thing in terms of enriching themselves at taxpayers’ expense. These people are primarily interested in themselves, not your child’s future.

This is an important issue for me personally because I homeschooled my kids. As my kids are older now, I am thinking about and considering the education of my grandchildren, who have not arrived yet, but are soon on the way. (God willing)

I have said it many times, no bureaucrat cares as much about your child as you do. You have your child’s best interests in mind, and therefore, you should educate them.
